Home for the Holidays: Getting Your House Ready to Celebrate

After the last holiday season, we are ready to celebrate this year in a big (although still safe) way! Unfortunately, our homes might not feel the same... With almost two years of retail therapy and working from home behind us, many of our houses need a little attention before they can welcome guests. At TruBlue, we know that you might not have the time – or the budget – to upgrade your guest bathroom or remodel your kitchen this year, but there are a few things you can do to make a great impression: declutter, clean and decorate!

The first step to get your home ready for guests is to declutter. Decluttering is tough, especially if you have kids, but even the best housecleaner can’t make your home sparkle if every corner and closet is packed to the gills. Take an honest look around your house and put things into three categories. Things in the “First Priority” pile should be things you still want to keep out and in public view. These might be the things you want to leave in the toy box in the living room, the family photos you want on the shelves, the coffee table book your grandmother loves. The “Second Priority” items are the things you want accessible, but that can be packed up, put into under-bed boxes or stored in the basement. You want to know where they are, but you probably don’t need them right now. When you look at what’s left – the third priority items – that’s when you have to start making decisions about what you want to keep, sell or donate. By the way, if you need help with this process, our friends at Caring Transitions can help!

Once your home is decluttered and organized, you can start working on cleaning. TruBlue can absolutely help with that, but if you’re convinced you want to clean on your own, there are a few items we’d encourage you to add to your regular cleaning list. When was the last time you cleaned your light fixtures and dusted your lampshades? Do you have cobwebs in the top corners of your rooms? Have you wiped down your baseboards? These are things that often go unnoticed that can make a big difference.

Finally, when your house is decluttered and clean, you can get out those holiday decorations! From snowman wine glasses to Christmas lights, we love holiday décor. What don’t we love? Dragging those boxes out of the basement and hanging the lights ourselves. That’s why we bring in TruBlue’s technicians to help! Let us help you make an impression this holiday season.
